Message Don't know where your smog tech got TCC from, but my 91 TT is a Cali emissions car and here is what mine says:

TWC/PAIR/HO2S/EGR/SMPI
Here is what each of the abbreviations means:
TWC -- There is a PAIR of Three-way Cats
HO2S -- Heater O2 Sensors
EGR -- EGR system
SMPI -- Sequential Multi-Port Injection

Effective Jan 1, 2009, all cats sold after the effective date must be on the list of exempt aftermarket cats.

Pre-OBD-II cats are required to perform closer to OE performance levels and expected to have greater model coverage. Read the FAQ.

So, your tech was particially correct. Although your cats are aftermarket, unless he can prove you purchased them after the effective date of Jan 1, 2009, you can't fail you for the cats.

However, be careful about the rest of the parts. Per California ARB Regulations, these are the items (and their definitions) on a vehicle that are regulated.

DEFINITIONS

* Air Cleaner Modification - modifications to the air cleaner and/or its housing.
* Air Filter/Intake Modification - open element air filters, modifications to the air flow intake tract, heat risers/preheat ducts.
* Engine Modification/Engine Change - kits that include multiple engine modifications such as new cylinder heads and camshafts, or boring and stroking; engine changes using an engine certified for another late model vehicle application, with additional engine modifications .
* Exhaust System/Exhaust Modification - exhaust manifold, exhaust headers, exhaust pipes, crossover pipes, etc.
* Fuel Line Modification - devices designed to attach to or be inserted in the fuel line.
Exemptions are no longer required for magnetic devices that are attached to the exterior of the fuel line; these devices have been determined to have no effect on emissions.
* Fuel System Modification - fuel filters, gas caps, pressure regulators.
* Intake/Exhaust System - a kit that includes both intake and exhaust components.

For the 1990-1996 Nissan 300ZX and 300ZX Turbo, these are the only things listed as legal under each category. Per regulations, if it's not listed here explicitly, it is not legal for use on a emissions-regulated vehicle.

Air Cleaner Modification:
NONE listed as legal.

Air Filter/Intake Modification:
JWT Pop-Charger is listed for 1990 - 1992 300ZX and 300ZX TT

K&N Filtercharger is listed for 1990 - 1993 300ZX

Stillen High Flow Intake System is listed for 1990 - 1996 NA

Injen for 1990 - 1996 NA

HKS Power Filter for 1990 - 1994 ZX and ZXTT

HKS Super Mega Flow for 1990 - 1996 ZXTT only

Engine Modification:
HKS Performance Package for 1990 - 1992 TT only
This is the SR-71 Z32TT package.

Exhaust System/Exhaust Modification:
Because by definition, all this stuff is pre-cat, nothing for the Z32 and Z32TT is listed. This means no modifications from the cats forward are legal. ARB don't care about cat-back.

The rest of the categories:
NONE listed as legal.

How do I know all this? I'm resourceful, plus I'm working on a project right now that requires me to be up-and-up on this crap that California regulates.
